Grades 1 – 8 (Including preparation for Sacraments)

Christ the King Religious Education Program assists parents by providing religious instruction and faith formation activities that gives them the opportunity to grow in love and knowledge of God and thus they are able to participate in the Catholic Church’s mission to proclaim, celebrate, and serve in the Church.  Classes begin in September.

The R.E. Program includes sacrament preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession), Confirmation, and First Eucharist. Sacramental preparation for grades 2-8 is a 2 year program in which your child(ren) will be prepared to celebrate the Sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation at the end of the 1st year and celebrate Confirmation and First Holy Communion at the end of the 2nd year.

General Policy for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation/Confession

A candidate must be at the age of discretion for sacramental preparation, seven years of age or above, which is traditionally in the 2nd grade, and must meet the following requirements:

  • be a baptized Catholic;
  • have the ability to recognize the difference between right and wrong;
  • have the capacity for sincere sorrow;
  • and be properly instructed.

“Children must go to the sacrament of First Reconciliation/ Confession/ Penance before receiving Holy Communion for the first time,” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1457).

General Policy for Sacraments of Confirmation & First Holy Communion

Both sacraments will be celebrated in the same Sacred Liturgy.

According to the Diocesan policy, the normal time for Confirmation is the 3rd Grade, usually around eight years old. This is in compliance with the universal law, which holds that a candidate for Confirmation must be at the age of discretion, seven years of age or above. A candidate for Confirmation must meet the following requirements:

  • be a baptized Catholic;
  • be capable of renewing their Baptismal promises, and must have previously been prepared for and received the Sacrament of Reconciliation (ordinarily occurs in 2nd Grade).
  • be properly prepared for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion.
